What did you do as a child?  What do your children or grandchildren do?  Does it involve fake tan, waxing and other cosmetic procedures?  Probably not.  What about competing in pageants?  The TV show Toddlers and Tiaras follows the controversial world of child beauty pageants and closely trails the pageant contestants and their families as they prepare for and compete in the pageant shows and try to win the all-important crown.

The girls are as young as two years old (sometimes even younger) and are plastered in fake tan and make up with false eyelashes, huge showy hairstyles and extravagant, sometimes inappropriate costumes.  They even wear fake teeth called flippers to improve their smiles.  After watching some of the shows I’m actually quite disgusted by what goes on and how pushy the parents are!  It’s unbelievable what these tiny kids are doing and how they look.  It’s actually quite creepy as they have faces that are made up to look like teenagers but on a tiny child’s body, it’s just not right!

What really shocked viewers recently was one episode that showed a mother bleaching her children’s teeth even though they were clearly protesting against it.   This is also the same mother that makes her daughter get her eyelashes tinted.  Her daughter does not want to get them tinted because she is scared it will harm her eyes but both her parents force her to as it will look better.  They are clearly not supporters of the saying it’s what is on the inside that counts.  You have to wonder what effect this will have on them later in life growing up in such a fake, beauty dominated and competitive environment.    Some of the parents are basically living their own dreams and hopes of being in the beauty pageant world through their children and forcing them to compete instead.

At the actual pageant shows the girls sometimes show their true age as they throw tantrums and some even getting upset when they are out on the stage by themselves.  It is no surprise when they are forced into uncomfortable outfits and put under extreme pressure!  Not quite what you expect these little girls to be doing.  When you need to put subtitles on a show because they are too young to speak and be understood properly, they are clearly not old enough to be doing half the things required at the pageant!

So will you be jumping on the child beauty bandwagon with your kids?  I will never understand the motivation behind it!!!
