OH NO!!! It has been announced that they are re-making the one and only 80’s hit film Dirty Dancing. The film studio Lionsgate has instigated the remake of the film that starred Jennifer Grey and the wonderful Patrick Swayze.
Kenny Ortega choreographed the original and will be back to direct the new film. He has also directed films such as High School Musical and the Michael Jackson movie This Is It. He said “The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me.”
He went on to say “I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring Dirty Dancing to the screen for a new generation. Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in movies such as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him.”
The original is so good that personally I don’t think that it should be touched. The film has always been a firm favourite around the world and is pretty timeless. The soundtrack was also a massive success and has been re-released many times with special editions. The movie was also transformed into a West End stage show which ended in July after five years in preparation for its UK tour which begins in September.
Will it still be set in the 60s? Will it still be the old soundtrack? In fact will it even have the same story or will it have some up to date twists? Oh who knows really! It is cult films like this that I do feel should be left alone and not be remade and you only have to look at other films that have been remade to see that it never really works! (The Italian Job, Planet of the Apes and The Wicker Man)
Swayze told the AFI back in 2009 that Dirty Dancing had stayed around for so long because it’s got so much heart. There will only ever be one Johnny and Baby for me that’s for sure!
