Now that the whole country’s going bonkers for the start of the 2012 Olympics, we thought we’d take a look at some of the lesser-known facts about the history of The Games. From the downright daft to the sublimely ridiculous, here are six trivia tit-bits that you probably never knew…

1.    The winner of the 1904 Olympic marathon in St. Louis, America, has his title abruptly removed when it was discovered that he had hitched a ride in a car for most of the course, prior to joining the rest of the runners just four miles from the finish line.
2.    In the 1932 Games, steeplechasers were made to run an additional lap after a dozy official lost count of how many had already been completed.
3.    The 1912 Greco-Roman wrestling final had to be postponed after both competitors were too exhausted to compete following the semi-final, which took 11 hours.
4.    Participants of the ancient Greek Olympics undertook all their events in the nude.
5.    On the subject of nudity, any streakers caught during the London 2012 games will be fined up to £20k!
6.    All female entrants, bar one, at the 1976 Olympics were subjected to a sex test; the only one to escape judgement was Princess Anne.

Do you Talk more than Text?

Findings this week have shown that mobile phone text messaging is now the most popular method of daily communication amongst adults in Britain. In fact, for the first time in years, we’re talking less on our mobiles in favour of texting, with the average Brit sending a whopping 200 texts a month according to Ofcom.
It seems that we prefer to type over the air-waves than have a face-to-face conversation, even when it comes to communicating with our closest friends and family members. 58% of us are texting at least once a day to say hello, ask what’s for dinner, and discuss topics such as what happened on Coronation Street last night. It seems, however, that we’re contradicting ourselves, as those surveyed said they’d prefer to meet in person or speak on the phone rather than resort to text.
We’re are also spending more time than we were in 2010 using social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch and play games with our pals. The increase is most likely due to the uptake in smart phones, which allow us to stay ‘plugged in’ even when we’re on the move.
Quite what Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the traditional telephone) or Samuel Morse (creator of the first electric telegram) would make of all this, we’re not quite sure…

How Katie gave Tom the Slip

For anyone who’s ever thought that Katie Holmes was a bit demure and dull like her character, Joey, who made her famous in Dawsons Creek, then think again; this artful dodger went all Mission Impossible-style whilst planning her daring divorce from Tom Cruise. For anyone who’s ever thought that Katie Holmes was a bit demure and dull like her character, Joey, who made her famous in Dawsons Creek, then think again; this artful dodger went all Mission Impossible-style whilst planning her daring divorce from Tom Cruise.
Allegedly tired of her hubby’s obsession with the Church of Scientology, and getting ever more desperate to leave, Katie turned to a pal who secured her a non-traceable pay-as-you-go mobile phone so that she could plot her stealthy escape.
Our cunning heroine also hired three separate law firms in no less than three different American states before filing for divorce in June of this year. Better to be safe than sorry, as they say, plus she can totally afford it…
For once, Tom is on the receiving end of an impossible mission, giving him a star-studded total of three divorces by the time the end credits start to roll.
Whether Mrs. Cruise gets to see the Colour of his Money remains to be seen, as the pre-nup is said to be “long, tight and stacked in Tom’s favour.” Hopefully, Tom won’t have his Eyes Wide Shut when things go to court, as we think Katie’s not in it for the cash, but just after her and Suri’s freedom. Either way, we wish them all the best.

TOWIE Finale Hookups: Book the Wedding Cake or Definitely Fake?

We don’t know about you, but we’re still reeling from the Marbella special of The Only Way is Essex. As usual, the show didn’t fail to disappoint with its abundance of bitching, bickering and cliffhangers, but with such a  wealth of hook-ups and romantic clinches, we begin to wonder whether there’s more fake in the […]

We don’t know about you, but we’re still reeling from the Marbella special of The Only Way is Essex. As usual, the show didn’t fail to disappoint with its abundance of bitching, bickering and cliffhangers, but with such a  wealth of hook-ups and romantic clinches, we begin to wonder whether there’s more fake in the storylines than in the suntans…
Firstly, we had a distinctly distracted Mario suddenly proposing to a shocked Lucy on-board a private boat. We were just starting to do a little happy dance until Sam said, “Lucy doesn’t know anything that’s just gone on.” What on earth could she mean?
Then, Gemma and Arg had a pool-side showdown. Having enjoyed a cheeky snog at the end of Series Five, Gemma heard that Arg had been making comments about her weight behind her back, and told him, in no uncertain terms, that he would not be getting any of her “candy.” Poor Arg – we’d heard he has a sweet tooth as well…
Finally, Ricky and Jess announced that they’re officially a couple. With Ricky’s womanising past, are they heading for Heart-break Hotel or hearts and flowers?
Who knows where our favourite boys and girls will end up in Series 6, but we guess there’s only one way to find out: by tuning in on 22nd July 2012…

We know you all love bingo, so we thought we’d share some fun facts about the glorious game! Fancy finding out why you may want to change your name to Margaret? Or perhaps how Bingo got it’s name? Then read on!

• The game we know and love was first named ‘Bingo’ in 1929. A game called Beano was being played at a carnival in the USA. Edwin Lowe, a toy salesman, showed the game to his friends. Apparently, one of the players yelled “Bingo!” instead of “Beano” when she made her first row – and the name stuck!

• The largest number of bingo players can be found in the USA, UK and Japan!

• The average bingo game takes up to 4 minutes to complete.

• Bingo mad? Well you must be clever then – research has shown that bingo is good for our brains! One study showed that people who played bingo did much better in certain mental tests than those who did not play! Better get down the local bingo hall then!

• A survey of regular bingo players found that people rated someone calling a ‘false’ bingo is the thing that irritates them most! Check those numbers people! :)

• On average, 26 people per year have to be taken to hospital …. due to overexcitement when winning at Bingo!

• Women with the name Margaret are more likely to win at Bingo than anyone else! (apparently… so don’t go changing your name just yet!)

• Celebrities love bingo! Catherine Zeta Jones, Robbie Williams and George Clooney are just a few of the celebrities that have revealed they love to play the game.

• 10% of bingo players have a lucky dabber or some type of lucky charm that they take with them to their local bingo hall. Some players admit they can’t play unless they have their lucky charm with them!

• Gala Bingo has the biggest jackpots in bingoland! They gave away a massive £45k last weekend, as well as having brilliant online games like Alice’s Wonderland, and the X Factor Scratch Card!
