Royal Ascot Ladies Day: Not Quite A Classy Affair!

Royal Ascot is meant to be a classy affair.  Or so I thought!  It was Ladies Day at Royal Ascot yesterday which brought the customary unusual hats, spattering of celebrities and of course drunken brawls.  Yes, you read that right, drunken brawls.

Other attendees looked on in horror as a fight broke out with one man wielding a champagne bottle and another basically using a table leg as a bat.  Not quite what we imagined would be happening at Royal Ascot to say the least.  It was something that I had always associated with prestige, celebrities and well-off, well-connected people.  The strict dress code that has always been firmly enforced was one of the things that pointed towards these associations.  However this year, there were tattoos on display left, right and centre.  Men were ignoring the favoured top hat; women were plastered in fake tan and poured into tasteless, tacky dresses, not the dreamy images I had first associated with Royal Ascot.  After being pulled apart by members of the military there were even several arrests.  Lovely.

It is strange to think that just last year actress Roxanne Pallett was refused entry for her dress apparently being too short, even though to on-lookers and judging by pictures it was more than respectable.  Looking at this year’s pictures, it is hard to say that the dress code is being enforced at all as it warns against the perils of over-done fake tan, visible tattoos and immodest attire yet all were easily spotted at the event.  Even commentator Sir Peter O’Sullevan commented on the decline in standards saying that “Sometimes the grandstands seem over-run by tattoos and bare flesh.  It’s disrespectful – not just to the Queen, but to the horses.”  Well said Sir!  It wasn’t all bad though, check out some of these crazy hat designs that stayed true to what Royal Ascot is all about for some people:

Anyway, without letting these events tar the rest of the day, it was touching to see footballer Michael Owen’s tears of joy as the horse he bred and owns won the last race of the day, the King George V Stakes.  It was nice to see that the horseracing and the Royal Ascot event still means a lot to some people, compared to the disregard for the event and its formality that had been shown by others earlier in the day.

Ah well, I will just have to hope that the remaining two days will bring the classiness back to Royal Ascot and the focus will not be on the drunken scraps of race goers, but back to some crazy hats, celeb attendees and of course last but not least the horse racing.

Royal Ascot 2011: True Hat Madness!

Royal Ascot has arrived and it sure didn’t disappoint.  What other event would attract both the Royal family and Z-list celebs? When some people may focus on the horses and the actual races, many others look forward to seeing what crazy hat creations will be debuted this year and if any celebs will make the humiliating mistake of failing to meet the strict dress code requirements like Roxanne Pallett last year.

Ladies day is set to bring many weird and wonderful spectacles with women aiming to outdo each other in the fashion stakes.  Many people are already betting on what colour of hat the Queen will wear at the Ladies Day event that takes place on Thursday 16th, with yellow currently being the favourite.  Even though the events only began yesterday, there has already been an array of emm how shall I put this… interesting hats! For many people the bigger the hat the better.  One of Tuesday’s most memorable hats is the Louis Mariette head-piece worn by Anneka Tanaka-Svenska.  How these women don’t topple over I will never know.

Ladies day will probably see the celebs flocking to Ascot, each wanting to look the best.  So far, the Royal Ascot has been lacking in the usual celeb appearances.  Well some lesser known ‘celebs’ have been in attendance like Jezza Kyle and his wife, Danielle Lineker and Holly Valance.  We look forwards to when the A-listers begin to arrive and hat war truly commences.  Other people attending the Royal Ascot had attention grabbing iPad and iPhone hats, huge feathered creations and even a ginormous crown outline created with flowers.  Lady Gaga was surely an inspiration for many of these wacky designs!

The lovely Kate Middleton is yet to make an appearance at the Royal Ascot.  We eagerly await her arrival to see what she will be wearing next as she has been displaying an impressive array of hats and outfits over the past week at the many royal engagements she has been attending.  We will keep our fingers crossed that she will appear at Ladies Day.  Bring on the rest of the week and the rest of the hats!  Show us what you’ve got ladies!!!
